HBOT is an acronym for HyperBaric Oxygen Therapy and is also represented in the acronym HBO. This treatment is also referred to as Hyperbaric Medicine.
HBOT is a treatment in which a patient breathes oxygen in a chamber, which is either hard or soft, at a higher atmospheric pressure.
This treatment allows the body to incorporate more oxygen into the body’s blood cells and plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid and other body fluids. Oxygen under pressure forces more oxygen into the tissues and encourages new blood vessels to grow. Blood plasma, the liquid component of blood, can carry 100% oxygen under pressure. This increase in oxygen absorption substantially enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Below is a visual depiction of hyperbaric oxygen in the blood plasma and tissues. Oxygen is represented as the small, white dots.
