Hyperbaric Therapy for Fibromyalgia Relief

Summary of Study

Fibromyalgia symptons - Hyperbaric Studies - HBOT Research

The study titled “A New Treatment Modality for Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy” explored the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition causing widespread pain, fatigue, and sensitivity, often lacks effective treatments. The researchers aimed to investigate whether HBOT, which involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, could reduce pain and improve quality of life for individuals with FMS by addressing low oxygen levels in tissues often associated with this condition.

Methodology

This randomized, double-blind study included 50 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Participants were split into two groups: one received HBOT sessions, and the other served as the control group. The HBOT group underwent 15 sessions, with each session lasting 90 minutes at 2.4 atmospheres absolute (ATA) of pressure in a hyperbaric chamber, conducted five times a week. The control group breathed normal air at standard atmospheric pressure. Researchers assessed the number of tender points, pain thresholds using an algometer, and pain intensity through a visual scale before treatment, after the first session, and after completing all 15 sessions.

Results

The results showed a substantial reduction in tender points and pain intensity in the HBOT group compared to the control group. Pain thresholds significantly improved by the end of the 15 sessions, indicating better tolerance to pressure on sensitive areas. In contrast, the control group did not experience notable changes. The findings suggest that HBOT effectively alleviates the primary symptoms of fibromyalgia and enhances comfort for those affected.

Conclusion

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy offers a promising approach to managing fibromyalgia by addressing low oxygen levels in affected tissues. By improving oxygen supply and reducing muscle hypoxia, HBOT demonstrated significant pain relief and better quality of life. This study highlights the potential of HBOT as an innovative treatment option for individuals with fibromyalgia, providing hope for those with persistent pain. Further research is encouraged to validate these findings.
