Evaluating Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Summary of Study

Mild traumatic Brain Injury - Hyperbaric Studies

The study, “Evaluating the Impact of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Neurofeedback on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report,” examined the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and neurofeedback in a 38-year-old male patient with recurring mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). It aimed to evaluate how these treatments improved cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life following two concussions sustained within 14 months. The study also sought to answer whether HBOT and neurofeedback provided synergistic benefits in alleviating post-concussive symptoms.

Methodology

The patient received HBOT in a monoplace hyperbaric chamber, starting with 40 sessions after his second injury. A total of 80 sessions were completed over time, with additional maintenance treatments. Neurofeedback, guided by quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), targeted brainwave irregularities linked to emotional and cognitive deficits. The patient also incorporated vitamin therapy to support his recovery. Data were collected through the Neurobehavioral Symptoms Inventory (NSI) and qEEG assessments.

Results

The patient experienced statistically significant improvements in neurobehavioral symptoms, including reduced anxiety, improved focus, and better mood regulation. After 100 HBOT sessions, he reported near-complete recovery and attributed cognitive, emotional, and physical improvements to the combined therapy. Despite notable progress, certain symptoms, such as headaches and noise sensitivity, persisted, requiring ongoing intervention.

Conclusion

This case highlights the potential benefits of combining HBOT and neurofeedback for effectively managing recurring mTBI. Together, these therapies addressed both structural and functional impairments, ultimately resulting in a significantly improved quality of life. Moreover, the findings emphasize the critical importance of adhering to treatment protocols while integrating personalized and multidisciplinary strategies for achieving optimal outcomes. However, further research and larger-scale studies are still needed to validate these highly promising results and ensure broader applicability.
